WELCOME TO THE MATHEWS PATH COMMUNITY

We are group of friends and neighbors whose goal is to help each other age at home for as long as possible.  Remember, PATH is you, and working together, we can make a real difference in the experience of aging at home. As a volunteer, you’ll have the satisfaction of being part of a community effort to improve the quality of life in Mathews.  If you need assistance, you can get help from your neighbors with some of the tasks that may be difficult for you.  Your membership in Mathews PATH will be a rewarding experience.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS

When you need a service within PATH’s scope, you can telephone our coordinator on a dedicated line.  The coordinator will schedule members’ requests for assistance and find volunteers to fulfill the request.   The line will be open from 9:00 a.m. To 11:00 a.m. from Monday to Saturday  At other times, you can leave a message with your name, number and request.  Please try to call 48 hours in advance to give the coordinator time to locate a volunteer.  The coordinator will call you back with the volunteer’s name and number.  The day before the service is scheduled, the volunteer will call you to confirm the time and your address.

CULTURAL OUTINGS

There are interesting museum exhibits and musical performances all around us, but sometimes driving to Richmond, Newport News or Norfolk seems daunting.  From time to time, PATH may schedule group bus trips to selected events throughout the year so that you can travel worry-free and enjoy art and music previously difficult to access. Cost sharing will make these ventures reasonable for all.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

We age more gracefully when we can keep our minds engaged.  PATH will invite speakers of interest to talk to members on a number of topics such as health, history or hobbies.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Being part of a social group is an important strategy for ensuring healthy aging.  PATH will schedule gatherings for members through the year.  It may be a picnic or an ice cream social or some other activity.  If you’re willing to host a gathering, let a board member know.   These events will help PATH members connect as a community and share stories about their lives and experiences.

REASONS TO JOIN PATH

PATH fills a gap in the ability of other agencies to provide services to residents who prefer to remain in their homes in their senior years rather than move to a continuing care retirement community, an assisted living facility, or a nursing home.

It offers services that address the practical, emotional, social and medical barriers to independent living, thereby allowing members to enjoy the comfort and familiarity of their own homes, even when faced with illness or limited mobility.

The services PATH offers enables members to call for specific help without feeling they are imposing on their friends and neighbors.

SOME OF THE SERVICES PATH

CAN PROVIDE

  • Transportation to and from appointments and shopping
  • Assistance with computers and electronics
  • Help with financial and personal paperwork
  • Phone check-ins with those living alone and unable to leave their homes
  • Meetings with informational talks, social events
  • Light handyman tasks
  • Help transitioning to home from hospital or nursing care
  • Facilitate sharing of medical equipment
  • Caregiver relief when needed
  • Meals when ill

Need a good roofer?  Ask our PATH coordinator for other member's experiences and the names of roofers they recommend. Need help with yard work?  See if someone has a person who they recommend.  By sharing information through our PATH coordinator, you can tap into the experience, expertise and recommendations of fellow members.

SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES

PATH provides a number of opportunities to "get out of the house" and meet "old friends" and make new ones! From ice cream socials to interesting and informative programs, members get together at least once per month. Nearly every program includes refreshments which allows ample time to meet and greet others. A list of programs and upcoming upcoming social opportunities can be found on the Events page.
